Does society's restrictions on what a person can and cannot do push them into committing a "wrongful" act?
- Stephen stated that when a person faces legal punishment, society appeals directly to his/her fears
- Stephen says that by going against what the person wants, society is causing him to rebel
- I believe that society pushes people to do bad things because people like to go against the norm, they like to be the one that defies authority; maybe it gives them a feeling of power
Are there any laws or rules that do not prevent harm to others?
- this is what Mill says is the whole purpose of laws
(we discussed this topic a bit in class)
