Constraining Laws

One law that I wholeheartedly support and agree with is the law against texting while driving in Greenville County, SC.  This is one law that can have severe consequences if it is broken.  Personally, I agree with this law because it is in place to keep me safe while I'm driving.  People always tell you to "drive safe", but you do not have control over what other people are doing while they are driving.  This law goes along with Mill's desire to have laws in order to prevent the harm of others.  If everyone obeyed the law, it would create safer roads to drive on.  Although this law is difficult to enforce, I believe that it is important to have.  If people stop texting and start focusing more on the road when they are driving, I believe that a lot of accidents could be avoided.

On the other hand, one law I disagree with is the age restriction on renting cars.  Right now, the law says that you must be 21 to rent a car.  I do not agree with this because it restricts my ability to travel on my own.  If I want to go somewhere on a trip, I would have to find a different form of transportation to use or someone to drive me around.  I do not understand why we can get our licenses at 16 or 17, vote at 18, but are not be able to simply rent a car until we are 21.  If we have a valid license, why should we not be allowed to borrow a car?  If we have been driving for about 5 years, what is the reason for stopping us from having this liberty?
