I am personally constrained, when I drive, by the speed limit. The speed limit of each road is made so that drivers can be safe in all conditions while driving on that particular road. Some people say that the speed limit is just a "recommended" speed and that it is fine to drive above the speed limit. In fact, radar detectors were invented so that people who do not want to be constrained by the speed limit can speed with out getting caught. Although I don't like some speed limits, I agree with them. Controlling the speed that people drive, protects not only the drivers themselves, but the others on the road. I will gladly surrender my liberty to drive as fast as my heart desires to protect other people and myself.
On the other hand, I do not agree with being constrained by the legal drinking age. I believe that if you can vote, smoke, and fight for America, you should be allowed to drink alcohol. If a person is sound enough of mind to know that they want to fight in a war or know who to vote for in an election, why are they not capable of making the decision to drink alcohol? I can understand why the law is put in place, but the age is issue I have with it. Being in college, alcohol is abundant. If someone is smart enough to be in college, they should be allowed to make their own decisions regarding alcohol. Lowering the drinking age, I believe, would help eliminate most of the problems that arise with underage drinking in college. Granted underage drinking would still occur, but it would most likely not be as bad. The constraints placed on me regarding alcohol make sense only if I am constrained in other ways (voting, smoking, etc.). The lack of liberty to drink until the age of 21 is not logical and should be remedied, even if that means raising the ages of other 18 year old liberties.
