Proposal 2- Martha Stewart

I am thinking of doing my paper on Martha Stewart and her trial of lying about a stock sale. It came to my mind when we were discussing the deterrence method of punishment last class, and people being used an an example (or to deter them from trying to cheat the market as well). I want to discuss the reasons for her verdict and whether or not she would have been punished if she was not famous. I will use the deterrence theory and explore the ethical judgments of Bentham to come to a conclusion of whether or not her jail sentence was deserved.
